WHAT DO READERS LOVE ABOUT ROMANCE?
      by Kat Martin

It’s a question that dozens of people have tried to answer.  On Valentine’s Day, article after article attempted to explore the concept.  Non-fiction books are written about it, essays are printed.  Internet sites Chat about it.
The truth is there is no single answer.

From the time we’re teenagers, we’re thinking about finding a mate.  When we’re old and alone, our spouse long gone, we’re remembering the romantic days when we fell in love, the days of our lives we spent with someone we loved.       From the start, it’s a journey fraught with perils.  Today, with people living in cities, the odds of finding the right mate are mind-boggling.  Thousands of bars and restaurants, millions of people all searching for someone.  People turn to Internet dating just to improve their chances of finding a person with the same interests...someone they might have a chance to love.
The same journey happens in a Romance novel and it is fraught with even more peril.  As the reader turns the pages, for a very brief time, he or she gets to feel all the wonderful emotions a man or woman feels when they fall in love.
In my latest book, AGAINST THE LAW, the third in the Raines Brothers Trilogy, Devlin Raines is a man whose heart has once been broken.  He’s determined never to fall in love again and he is dedicated to that end.
Until he meets the beautiful and talented Lark Delaney.  From that moment on, Dev is caught up in an emotional rollercoaster ride that carries him and Lark into deeper and deeper peril.
Not only does he have to protect this woman he is wildly attracted to, but he has to guard his emotions, has to fight to keep himself from falling in love--which is the last thing Dev wants.
And the best part about reading a Romance is that from the very first page, the reader secretly knows that whatever perils this couple faces, whatever suffering they endure, will all be worth it.
Because by the last page of the book, these lovers going to get the happy ending they deserve, the forever kind of love.
My heart is in these books, AGAINST THE WINDAGAINST THE FIREAGAINST THE LAW.  Not only did I love the brothers, Jackson, Gabe, and Devlin, but I loved the ladies who snared these hunky men.
When I finished AGAINST THE LAW, I didn’t want to let go.
      Couldn’t.
      So I didn’t.
In Dev and Lark’s story, AGAINST THE LAW, three of Dev’s friends show up to help him rescue Lark’s missing four-year-old niece.  Trace, Johnnie, and Jake were such amazing guys I knew I had to tell their stories.
Fortunately, Mira agreed, and in November, AGAINST THE STORM, Trace Rawlin’s story, is scheduled to hit the bookshelves.
I’m hoping by the time readers finish the Raines Brothers Trilogy, they’ll be wanting more of the yummy AGAINST men and their sexy ladies, and that they’ll be watching for AGAINST THE STORM.
Until then if you haven’t read AGAINST THE LAW, I hope you’ll look for it.  And don’t forget AGAINST THE WIND and AGAINST THE FIRE, the first two books in the trilogy.

Until then, happy reading and all best wishes, Kat

  1. I read for the entertainment. I would much rather read than watch tv. Reading relaxes me, and allows me to just escape.

  11. Kat -
I always loved your writing but I'm thrilled with your latest series! My sister-in-law and her family live in a little town in Wyoming called Baggs and a lot remains of the cowboy days there still.

My brother-in-law grew up on a ranch that was Bureau of Land Management land that was in Wyoming as well as Colorado and his father used to send his brothers off to "gather the herd". They would pull a trailer with their horses and drive as far as they could drive and ride their horses to get the cattle. It would take them several days before they would return to the ranch with the cattle.

His father was in a PBS special with two other cowboys about cowboys and I think it was called The Last Cowboys. In Baggs the old west still lives on and even though it is small and isolated you still feel like your living in the "old" west!

  12. I love to read. Got reintroduced to it when the Twilight books came out and all the talk about them made me curious enough to go buy them. lol I haven't stopped since then. About a yr later my husband who is a truck driver found 3 books in the trash at a truck stop and got them for me. One was a Terry Goodkind book with like 600 plus pages i think and he started reading it. Now he reads all the time too in his down time. WE read for entertainment and to relax and escape our daily lives for a bit. PLUS it's fun and worth a great laugh or two.

  13. Reading has been one of my favorite pastimes ever since I learned how to do it—and that’s been a long time! I love that I can escape into a new world or experience something different about this one. Whether I’m reading mysteries for the thrills, romance for the HEAs or non-fiction “just because,” it’s relaxing and entertaining. And now, I have the pleasure of reading Dr. Seuss and other toddler books to my grandkids. How many of my other hobbies can I share like that?

Thanks for visiting, Kat. Your series is on my TBR list.

  14. Like the escape from "real life" that can be found in romance books (where the girl always gets her boy and they both defeat the villain). Like that I can carry a book around with me everywhere and open it up and read it anytime I have a free minute.

Kat Martin is an automatic buy for me -- can't wait to read these next two trilogies.

  15. I've been reading since I was old enough to walk to the library. I think I was 12 or 13 when I had run out of books in the children's section and was forced upstairs and the librarian gave me a Jeanette Hayer book to read, and the rest was history... Since then I have branched out to other 'romance' genres, but always find myself seeking books that deal with either a historical aspect or are set in places where that good old American town feel is.

  16. My favorite pastimes are reading, watching TV Dramas and Netflix movies...notice reading is mentioned first. It is by far, my favorite thing to do! I've never read Kat Martin's work...I'd love the opportunity to start with this book. Count me in the draw please!

  17. Readers love romance because it gives them hope! Hope that they will have their own "HEA". Hope that the love they do have will be a lasting, happy, fulfilling relationship. Also, it's just plain good for the mind, the heart, and the soul. It sets loose all those good brain chemicals and lets us escape into a romantic fictional fantasy world. Fabulous : )
