A Peek into the Sausage Factory...
a Guest Post by Alison DeLaine

We've all heard that old adage about watching sausage get made. I'm convinced the principle holds true for watching books get written. If you actually did observe this entire process, you might never read again! It's that messy.

The Guest Post:

For the Love of Breeches...
a Guest Post by Alison DeLaine

What's Not to Love Inside Breeches?

Oops. I meant to say about breeches. Seriously. There’s a lot to love about them. Any woman worth her salt fantasizes about the days when a girl could ogle a man's legs without having her view obstructed by extra yardage. (Of fabric. What kind of blog post do you think this is?)

Breeches were the mini-skirts of their day--except the male/female roles were completely reversed. And some of those men had a damn fine pair of legs. Which, of course, is exactly how I envision my hero in A Gentleman 'til Midnight. Because I just wouldn't write a hero who didn't have good legs. And by "good," I mean strong, muscular, and powerful enough to sustain the leverage required for a good, long--

Well, never mind about that. Let's just say that for Captain James Warre (aka the Earl of Croston), performance isn't an issue:

“Touch me, Katherine,” he rasped, but she was already there. Her hands moved over the front of his breeches—too slow, too soft. His breeches were so tight it hurt. Ah, God—he undid the fastening and…"
And you’ll just have to read the book for the rest, because it wouldn’t be appropriate on a family blog like NARB.

As you can see, breeches play a very crucial role in the historical romance. Really, as an author, I'm not sure what I would do without them. I like to imagine that a man's breeches could reveal… well… all kinds of things about what he might be thinking. In A Gentleman ‘til Midnight, my heroine is pretty sharp about these things. Her cutlass is pretty sharp, too, and comes in handy when cornered by an unwanted rakehell:

Apparently sensing victory, the duke pushed away from the railing and took a step toward her. “I’m very sure when I meet a woman who would appreciate my strengths.” There was just enough light filtering from the windows to see his strengths bulging hard inside his breeches.
“Oh, yes. I certainly can appreciate them.” Katherine feinted with her left hand as though she meant to touch him.
“Then by all means, let us— Bloody hell!” The duke jumped back three feet when she whipped her cutlass from its hiding place in her skirts.

Let’s just say the poor duke’s breeches ended up a casualty of that encounter.

Really, the saddest thing about breeches in a historical romance is that at some point—yes, it’s true—they must be pulled up and refastened. For my Captain Warre, that certainly marked a low point:

Was that it, then? A hasty farewell as he buttoned his breeches and stepped out of her coach two streets away to avoid being seen? Sod it all, he’d made a bloody mess of things.

There’s just so much implied in a phrase like “he buttoned his breeches,” isn’t there? But if implications aren’t enough for you, I’m giving away a FREE copy of A Gentleman ‘til Midnight to TWO lucky people who comment here on or before December 23rd! Winners will be chosen on December 24.

Can't Help Falling in Love...with Heather Snow! (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Please welcome to the blog newly published authoress, Heather Snow!
I am so excited to have her on the blog today to celebrate the release of her new novel, SWEET ENEMY, which will be available from Penguin Publishing in all formats on Feb. 7th!
Until then, you'll have to make due with the delicious sneak peeks laced throughout this thoroughly entertaining guest post she has put together.
Without further adieu:

About Heather:
Heather Snow is a historical romance author with a degree in Chemistry who discovered she much preferred creating chemistry on the page, rather than in the lab. She is forever trying to wrangle her left and right brain to work together (some days with more success than others!), but if her two sides had to duke it out, left would win every time—which can be a creative challenge. Luckily, she loves challenges…she just goes about solving them analytically.

Heather lives in the Midwest with her husband, two rambunctious boys and one very put upon cat. She sincerely hopes you find her stories have just the right chemistry…

"Historical intrigue and heart-pounding passion make Sweet Enemy a great read. Romance fans will love it.

-#1NYT Bestselling Author JULIE GARWOOD

Geoffrey Wentworth, a war hero and rising political star, never wanted to be the Earl, but when his brother dies, he knows his duty—take up the responsibility for his family’s estates. His mother’s definition of duty differs from his, however, and can be summed up in one word—heirs. When Geoffrey rushes home to answer her urgent summons, he finds himself host to a house full of women, all vying to become the next Countess of Stratford. But his love is Parliament, where he wields his influence and reputation to better the lives of ex-soldiers, until a tempting houseguest and a secret from his past threaten his freedom…and his heart.
Liliana Claremont, a brilliant chemist, doesn’t want to be any man’s wife, much less a Countess. If she had tuppence for every time she’d been told her place was filling the nursery, not experimenting in the laboratory, she could buy the Tower Bridge. However, when she receives a coveted invitation to the Earl’s house party, she trades in her beakers for ball gowns and gladly takes on the guise of husband hunter—for the chance to uncover what the Earl had to do with the murder of her father.

Liliana believes the best way to get the answers she needs is to keep her enemy close, though romance is not part of her formula. But it only takes one kiss to start a reaction she can't control...

I am so excited to present this amazing guest post by an author I've heard so much about. You can find her first book Touched By A Theif in print and in ebook, along with her latest release in the anthology Improper Gentleman. You should also be on the look out for her upcoming collborative novel with Connie Mason called Sins of the Highlander. Below, discover a little more about this author and her latest release which looks absolutely enticing! Please welcome to the blog,:

Mia Marlowe

About the Author:
Award winning author Mia Marlowe writes historical romance for Kensington Publishing and Sourcebooks. Her debut title received acclaim from romance luminaries. #1 New York Times bestseller Victoria Alexander says Mia's Touch of a Thief has "adventure and heat and everything I want in a great story!" UK's BooksMonthly has crowned Mia Marlowe "the queen of saucy historical romance."

Mia learned much of what she knows about storytelling from singing. A classically trained soprano, she won the District Metropolitan Opera Auditions and shared a stage with Placido Domingo. As she prepared for operatic roles, she devised back stories for her characters. Since she's worn a real corset, and had to sing high C's in one, she empathizes with the trials of her fictional heroines. But in Mia's stories, they don't die in a Parisian garret. They get to live and keep the hero!

Guest Post with Karen Erickson

Time for FUN!
Get ready! Karen Erickson is hi-jacking the blog today and telling us about her first historical romance being released by Carina Press! I'am so excited for her book!:
About the Author:
© 2008 Chaos Photography
"I’ve always loved the written word. From being one of the best readers in my kindergarten class to penning romantic stories that never ended about my favorite band members (Duran Duran!) in high school, I always had a feeling I wanted to write. It just took me a while to seriously pursue it.
With the birth of my third child came a realization – it’s one thing to talk about writing a book, another thing entirely to actually do it. So I decided to go for it and in 2005 I began my pursuit in writing toward publication. After completing a few clunkers that should never see the light of day, my first erotic romance novella was published with Cobblestone Press in 2006. I’ve since been published with a handful of other epublishers including Ellora’s Cave and Samhain Publishing. I have recently sold to Loose Id and Carina Press.
On a personal note I’m a native Californian who lives in the foothills below Yosemite with my husband and three children. Oh and the dog, the cats, the rooster and the chickens…"

Why I love a strong man
Full disclaimer: I am married to a geek. He’s in great shape, but he’s not exactly lifting cars with one finger. But what I love to read about in my romance novels isn’t always the same as what I have in real life. What would be the point of reading if it was?

A Mother's Love, An Inspiration: Guest Post and Giveaway with Kat Martin

The fabulous Kat Martin is guest blogging today to tell us about a subject close to her heart- which also happens to be the inspiration behind her upcoming release (out April 5th) entitled 'A Song For My Mother'. Without further adieu, please welcome our special guest:
About the Author:
"For New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin, a career in real estate led her down the road to romance. Through real estate, Kat found her own perfect match--her husband, Western author Larry Jay Martin.
"We were on opposing sides of a transaction--I represented the seller and he represented the buyer," Kat recalls.
A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author! "It was quite a romantic story," she admits. "I'd still like to see it get published." Then, after doing some editing for her future husband, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing.
Kat moved on to become the bestselling author of over fifty historical and contemporary romance novels. To date, 12 million copies of her books are in print, and she's been published around the globe, including Germany, Norway, Sweden, China, Korea, Bulgaria, Russia, England, Estonia, Lithuania, South Africa, Italy, Poland, Thailand, Portugal, Turkey, The Slovak Republic, Spain, Argentina, Estonia, Czech Republic and Greece.
When she's not writing, Kat also enjoys skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe. Currently, she's busy writing her next book."

Guest Post:"Novels Translated To Film: A New Trend in Television?"

Romance Novels Translated To Film:
A New Trend in Television?

Guest Byline: Wendy Lau is a writer based in New York City who has a true love for romance stories whether it is through novels or movies. She is a guest blogger for My Dog Ate My Blog and writes on Online Universities for Guide to Online Schools.

In one form or another, romance is a subject with a following. Why have great romance novels just end there? Why not expand and translate it to film or made-for-TV movies? Clearly, there is little reason not to, and that is why there is a growing trend of romance novels translating to motion picture.

Think Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger and, of course, Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell. People just can't get enough of good, old fashion romance.

Sex and the City is a great example. What started out as a collection of essays published in 1997 turned into an HBO television series with a long run, from 1998-2004. Then for the television series' 10th anniversary in 2008, the movie came to life. It didn't end there: in 2010, the movie had a sequel.

Some of the bestselling American authors of romance novels are also getting a second chance with their great love stories.

Debbie Macomber's single novel Mrs. Miracle is a Hallmark Channel movie. Her novel This Matter of Marriage also made it to made-for-TV movie.

A number of Nora Roberts' books have also become made-for-TV movies on the Lifetime Movie Channel. Collections featured include Angels Fall, Montana Sky, Carolina Moon, Blue Smoke, Northern Lights, Midnight Bayou, High Noon and Tribute.
Danielle Steele's novels have also turned to romantic made-for-television drama, including No Greater Love, Vanished, Zoya, Mixed Blessings, Once in a Lifetime, Message from Nam, Heartbeat, Secrets, Changes and Daddy. Her novel Family Album aired on NBC as a two-part miniseries.

While there are times when the translation to a movie or television series doesn’t always match up in full to the romance novel, some appreciate that you can cut to the chase. Reintroducing the love story gives it new life. It also creates discussion, encouraging those who have seen the story but have not read the story to pick up the book.

Just look at Eat, Pray, Love for example. The book was on the New York Times' bestseller list for 187 weeks. This was a book Oprah also enjoyed for which she devoted two episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show to. Just before the movie premiere, Oprah brings in Julia Roberts, who starred in the movie to discuss her role and her adventurous travels for the movie. All of this gives the romance story another chance for more romance story lovers to re-experience the story or experience the story anew.

Great romance is never-ending! It doesn't matter if the romance originates from a book or film, if there is a good love story to tell, just share it!
--
Thanks for stopping by and sharing Wendy. What an interesting post. I LOVE when a great book (especially a historical) gets transformed to film. If a director can do it justice, it's even better. Check out THIS post I did a while back where I showcased some of my favorite historical romance films-most were based off of novels by Jane Austen, Edith Wharton, or influenced by hundreds of books on the subject of British aristocracy!
