Please welcome to the blog,:

Mia Marlowe

About the Author:
Award winning author Mia Marlowe writes historical romance for Kensington Publishing and Sourcebooks. Her debut title received acclaim from romance luminaries. #1 New York Times bestseller Victoria Alexander says Mia's Touch of a Thief has "adventure and heat and everything I want in a great story!" UK's BooksMonthly has crowned Mia Marlowe "the queen of saucy historical romance."

Mia learned much of what she knows about storytelling from singing. A classically trained soprano, she won the District Metropolitan Opera Auditions and shared a stage with Placido Domingo. As she prepared for operatic roles, she devised back stories for her characters. Since she's worn a real corset, and had to sing high C's in one, she empathizes with the trials of her fictional heroines. But in Mia's stories, they don't die in a Parisian garret. They get to live and keep the hero!

About the Book:

IMPROPER GENTLEMEN
featuring Mia's novella, A Knack for Trouble
Unsuitable. Forbidden. Oh-so-seductive. These gentlemen are hardly respectable. But they are the very, very best at being bad…
Lord Aidan Stonemere didn’t go from prison to a title by playing by society’s rules. If he wants something, he takes it.
Rosalinde Burke didn’t object to being taken. Once. To keep her from marrying a proper viscount, Aidan will do whatever it takes to remind her how deliciously good being improper feels…

Guest Post:
First let me say thank you for having me here at Not Another Romance Blog! I'm tickled to offer a signed copy of IMPROPER GENTLEMEN, featuring my novella A Knack for Trouble, to a randomly drawn commenter!

Here are the facts, just the facts, about this little murder mystery romance:
Setting: 1827 Bermuda & 1830 England

Subgenre: Historical

Hero: Aidan Danaher, Lord Stonemere and former convict

Heroine: Rosalinde Burke

One sentence summary: Aidan is determined to win the love of the woman he ruined, no matter what rules he has to break to do it.

Scene I like most and would never cut: There are several, mostly dealing with the creative ways my hero makes his way into the heroine’s chambers. He’s quite . . . athletic.

Thing my heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying: Actually, Rosalinde’s something of a risk-taker, though she doesn’t mean to be. She hopes not to be caught with Aidan in her bedchamber, but she can’t help opening her window to the night…and whatever else might come in.

One quirky thing about your hero: Aidan has “the Knack.” It’s the Celtic gift of being able to plant an idea in someone else’s mind. The catch is it only works once and then the subject is immune to suggestion, so Aidan has to be judicious about using it.

My heroine’s occupation, or rather her preoccupation, since gentlewomen didn't seek employment during her time: Like most young ladies of her time, Rosalinde’s goal is marriage. Most specifically, she has to marry a titled, respectable gentleman or her wealthy great-aunt won’t help her father pay off his monumental gambling debts. Unfortunately, though Aidan is Lord Stonemere, his past as a convicted felon means he’s anything but respectable.

My hero’s occupation, or rather his obsession since gentlemen did not wish to be considered "in trade" during his time: Aidan inherited property and tenants to manage, but he’s chiefly engaged in trying to learn who really killed the woman he was imprisoned for murdering. When he’s not trying to seduce Rosalinde again, that is.

What I think readers will like best about this book: I think readers will love having 3 stories from 3 authors with 3 wickedly good heroes to fall for! My co-authors, Diane Whiteside and Maggie Robinson, are both brilliant writers!

What's next: Next January, my first collaborative novel with New York Times Bestseller Connie Mason will be released from Sourcebooks! It’s called SINS OF THE HIGHLANDER and we had a ball bringing this tale to life. It’s the story of Mad Rob MacLaren who thought stealing his enemy’s bride from the altar was the perfect revenge for his wife’s death. He never expected to learn that his heart hadn’t died with her.

But before SINS OF THE HIGHLANDER hits the bookstores, two of my enovellas will be released this fall--My Lady Below Stairs and A Duke for all Seasons. I plan to offer the Duke free to my newsletter subscribers for a limited time, so please pop over and sign up to receive notice about it!

About Mia Marlowe:

Favorite movie of all time: Whew! It depends on if you want my thinking movie, my romantic movie or my silly movie. In that case it would be THE MISSION with Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro. It’s a heartbreaking look at colonial South America. My favorite romantic movie is THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR with Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo. What middle aged joy! And my all time go-to silly movie is GALAXY QUEST with Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver. Hysterical!

Favorite kind of story to get lost in: A story that immerses me in another world and invites me to try on the heroine’s life for a while.

First book I remember reading: Oh, my! It must have been something by Dr. Seuss. I remember really getting into reading dog and horse stories like Lassie Come Home and Black Beauty, but I couldn’t say what the first one was.

Favorite fairy tale: Beauty and the Beast. Is there a more enduring myth than the ability of a woman to fix what's wrong with a man?

Quick way to unwind and relax: I take a cup of coffee out to my balcony with a book. We have a view of the Mystic River for which I’m insanely grateful. There’s something about looking at water that lowers my blood pressure almost immediately.

Tea or Coffee: Both. I like tea iced and my coffee the way I like my heroes--hot and strong!

Dog person or cat person: Actually I've had--hold on!--dogs, cats, horses, assorted goldfish, and a gerbil I thought would never die. Right now I'm a condo-dweller so my menagerie is down to two small dogs.

  2. Hi Mia. I loved the Thomas Crowne Affair also. Though, I have to admit there isn't a Pierce Brosnan movie I don't like. But the topic I'm going to share is my favorite faerie tale. I love Sleeping Beauty. Even with my eyes open I can still picture the book- Aurora, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather as well as Prince Philip and the dragon. I think I always wanted 3 little faeries fluttering around my shoulders. It's funny because I often find myself humming the tune from the Disney movie. ;) Good luck with the new releases. Jordan

  4. Jordan--Those little faeries were darling, weren't they? A couple years ago at RT there were a pair of sisters who looked just like those Disney characters when they dressed up for the Faery Ball.

  5. Hi Eli! I haven't tried Supernatural yet. I'm assuming it's a TV show along the lines of TrueBlood and such. I'll confess to a weakness for the steam-punkish Warehouse 13!

  6. Ah my favourite movie of all time.. Hard to pick really I have so many, but I would have to say "The Quiet Man" with Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne or "An Affair to Remember" with Deborah Kerr and Gary Grant.. And if I was going to pick an animated movie I would have to say "Lady and the Tramp"... that scene where they are sharing the spagetti, gets me everytime...

  7. My favorite fairy tale is the same as yours. Beauty and the Beast. I think I have read almost every book version of it and watched every cartoon, TV show and movie about it. Even the French version! Thank God for the English captions under the movie. lol But I just love this fairy tale. I think it gives hope that anything is possible and that even when you think all hope is lost, you should never give up.

  8. Hi Mia! Thanks for the lovely post!
As you mentioned The Thomas Crown Affair as one of your favourite movies, I have to say I love every movie with Pierce Brosnan in it! He is my actor-boyfriend. :) I loved him already in Remington Steele and I think he was a great Bond. I think I need to do a little rewatch of some films tonight. ;)

  11. Hi Mia and Rita!

Great post Mia, thank you for sharing!Thank you Rita for having another wonderful guest!

When I'm in a 'reading-relaxing' mood I love to read anything by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. I do read newer books, my TBR pile is definitely stacked with awesome reads! In my times of 'dig-out-something-older', that's who I turn to. One of my fav's is THE WOLF AND THE DOVE, what a book!

My movies of choice depends on my mood. I'm basically in a goofy mood when I watch this movie....THE WEDDING SINGER. I can't help myself for some reason, I guess it's the music. I remember a lot of these songs from high school! LOL!! Plus I do enjoy watching Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler together, they're just too cute in this movie! :-)

Another fun movie for me is A KNIGHT'S TALE with Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany and Heath Ledger. If you haven't seen this movie it's bascially a new twist on a 14th century tale, it mixes old and new, pretty wild if you ask me. Mainly, it's entertaining and that's what I look for in a movie. As long as I like it, it's a good one.

    Have an awesome day!

  12. Mia -- congrats on the release, it sounds like a fab story & I hope I can find room on the TBR for it ;) I'm a fan of beauty & the beast also, & tend to love those romance books built around the theme.

  14. Mia -
I love your books written as both Mia and Emily because you always give me that "Take me away" calgon moment!

I can't remember not reading but the first book I read solely for myself was The Secret Garden. I received it as a Christmas gift from my Aunt who I think sometimes knew me better than I knew myself. I was probably in 5th grade at the time and can remember sitting in a chair by the Christmas tree and being mesmorized by the story. My family finally had to drag me away to the table to eat dinner. I can remember how happy I was that we had a few days off before having to go back to school so I could finish it! My parents ended retiring and moving while I was in college on the other side of the country and the only thing I was upset about was they hadn't packed and moved my books especially my treasured copy of A Secret Garden.

Thank you for all the wonderful hours your stories have given me and all your readers and the opportunity to get a download of a Duke for All Seasons and to win a copy of Improper Gentlemen!

I love the subtle paranormal/supernatural powers that you give your characters--just enough to make the books feel magical. It actually reminds me of magical realism in books by Latin American writers (Like Water for Chocolate, for example)--or Alice Hoffman. Can't wait to read this one. (Picture that with an exclamation point at the end of it; I'm trying to swear off.)

  18. Hi Mia, I am definitely a cat person although since we have had kids, we haven't had any animal for about 9 years. All of sudden, my husband has decided he wants to get a dog! I'm a little nervous as I've never been really around a dog for a long period of time. And, they are so different than cats. I love how cats pretty much take care of themselves and seem so independent. Dogs seem the complete opposite so I hope I do okay with one.

  20. My favourite fairy tale is also Beauty and the Beast. I like heroes to be dark and tormented but to also have hope. Beauty was Beast's light and she saw and loved him for who he was.
