"Christmas Glitter": X-mas Guest Post and Giveaway with Patricia Rice

Patricia Rice here--

Thank you for inviting me to visit your delightful blog!

I know everyone loves heartwarming notes about Christmas past, and I could write one about choosing our baby’s first Christmas tree with less than five dollars in our pockets, or another from years later when the babies were teenagers and insisted on twenty-foot trees covered in a few miles of blinking lights, but I’m going to be crass instead and say I love glitter. And Christmas is the season of glitter.
I’m not talking about just the shiny gold stuff that litters the carpet after shaking out the tree skirt, but transcendent colored lights and twinkling candles and shiny stars and all the color and light that bring joy in the dark of winter. I think the first time I fell in love with glitter was when I was a kid, maybe eight or nine, and we had a Christmas tree covered in big fat colored light bulbs with shiny silver icicles to reflect the lights. I could have sat on the floor for hours just admiring that rainbow blaze of glory.
These days, I have candles in all the windows, hang stars from the roof, and yes, I have gold glitter on Christmas stockings, tree skirts, and table ornaments. I’ll wear glitter with my jackets, shoes, or my jewelry or all three, depending on how festive I’m feeling. And my tree ornaments are crystal and silver and reflective surfaces. I’m probably channeling some distant ancestor celebrating the winter solstice and the return of the sun, but I’m fine with that.

  1. My husband starts putting up outdoor lights right after Thanksgiving. He really does a great job. We always have a winter scene in our yard with deer and Santa Claus my kids love it! I have a little pretty tree and a few decorations inside. I love to decorate but don't go overboard only because I'm kinda lazy! LOL! Thanks for sharing with us today great post!

  2. The day after Thanksgiving is when we put up all of our decorations inside and out. I have candles in all of the windows. Our fat Christmas tree is in the front window decked out with white lights! We have a light up train, reindeer, bushes and trees outside! Inside we have tons of light up characters and a Christmas village that the boys like to add their legos to.

  3. We actually have all of our decorations up by the end of Thanksgiving weekend. Believe if we could put them up before that I would. We have lights everywhere, both inside and out. I love it. The more lights the better.

  6. I don't celebrate Xmas, but I when I lived in the Southwest, I loved to go around on Xmas Eve and look at the luminarias that many people would put out to line their drives and walkways. They were so peaceful and fit in so well with the desert landscape.

  7. There are no electric lights at my house on Christmas Eve until we light the tree after dinner. We live by the glow of candles before that. It is beautiful.

  8. We usually put on a big colorful PAROL (ornamental star-like Christmas lanterns from the Philippines) in front of our house, the bigger the better. We've always had one ever since i can remember.

    Merry Christmas Patricia!
