Rita's Best Reads in 2010!

It was hard trying to narrow down the field for the Best Book that I read all year. As you guys should know, I visit my library almost weekly and I've read so many books from the 90's and even the 80's. I try to stay up to date on the latest, but sometimes the oldies really are goodies. This year's crop had some real pleasers and it was so hard to choose just one as my fav. But I did, so without further adieu, My Pick for the Best Book in 2010:

'Till Dawn With the Devil' by Alexandra Hawkins
Click for: My Review

This book was just gold! The heroine wasn't some simpering miss or sassy blue stocking. She had a quiet grace to her and astounding dignity despite the fact that she was nearly blind and everyone around her treated her like some delicate cripple. It captivated our hero almost as much as it inspired me. And speaking of the hero, he was great to read about. Being a Lord Of Vice, you wouldn't expect to feel empathy for him, but you do. And combined with the fact that he brings the best out of an already amazing heroine, you can't help but love this pair!

"What Makes Christmas Special at the DiPasqua's": X-mas Guest Post and Giveaway with Lila DiPasqua

The things that make Christmas Special …at the DiPasqua’s!
It’s no secret that the books in my Fiery Tales series are based on fairy tales. Classic fairy tales with my own sensual twists, to be precise. Oh, but that’s not all! I’ve even set them in the very time and place when the genre of fairy tales was born! Yup, during the time period when the creator of THE TALES OF MOTHER GOOSE—17th century French lawyer/writer Charles Perrault first brought the world Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, to name a few.
He lived during a time that was as elegant and refined as Regency England—in the reign of the Sun King. Now that was one flashy monarch! He did everything on a grand scale. Don’t believe me? Check out the home he had constructed for himself—the opulent Palace of Versailles!
Christmas during the 17th century was strictly a religious holiday. The King and the royal family spent most of the day at mass. Gifts were exchanged in January, on the 12th night. Oh, and there was no Christmas tree. Christmas trees were a German tradition.
As much as I love this time period—and I do so adore it!—I just couldn’t imagine Christmas without a tree. Or five. *winks*

Here is a list of the *must-haves* every Christmas at our home:
    Funky Red Tree Mr.DiPasqua Got
  1. Christmas trees! (If you don’t count the funky red ones my husband bought, we have 3).  The two smaller trees are about five feet tall.  The larges one stands near the fireplace—10 feet high—with a foot-tall angel adorning the top.  It isn’t easy getting her placed safely each year.  The kids and I stand around the tree, arms out, ready to catch the angel in case she topples while hubby stands on a chair and tries to place her on top.

'The Princess In His Bed' by Lila DiPasqua -Review-

This stunning and scorching sophomore offering by DiPasqua was positively delectable. The Fiery Tales Collection gets even more heated with the addition of these three retold fairy tales.
‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ ‘The Ugly Duckling’ and ‘The Princess and the Pea’ get an erotic makeover and give adults their own version of a bedtime story.
A cousin's ex-lover's ring finds it's way into an irresistible rake's pocket. The deception to win it back leads to some steamy 'missions'; A woman with scars that run far deeper than on her body decides to take the lead and experience pleasure before it's too late; And a princess, masquerading as a man has a pouch filled with the King's diamond and will have to gamble her brother out of the poor house, all while resisting the sexy spy at the tables. All this an more awaits you in between the covers.

[Read an excerpt: here]

The Marquis' New Clothes-Aimee de Miran is embroiled in a scandalous plot and deception to recover the lost ring of her cousin’s ex-lover. Louise d’Arcy’s torrid relationship with Renault de Sard has had it’s fair share of lover spats; but when Renault casts Louise aside, she retaliates but taking his jeweled ring given to him by the king. Louis immediately regrets her theft and wants to return the ring before her ex-lover-who also happens to be the King’s Lieutenant General of Police (and a stick up the butt)-before he has the chance to realize it’s gone and seeks justice. Unfortunately, the ring finds it’s way from Louise’s hand to the pocket of Adam de Vey’s justacorps.

Adam, the Marquis de Nattes, has been infatuated with Aimee de Miran (his good friend’s wife) for many years. With the passing of Aimee’s husband, Adam sees his opportunity to purge the enchanting Aimee from his system once and for all. The only problem is: she hates his guts! Aimee’s husband took advantage of her youthful and romantic feelings, destroying her dreams of love and a perfect marriage by choosing his whores over her. She won’t fall for another handsome rake with a wicked tongue, but Adam is determined to have her.

-Q&A-
RJ: Hey Lila! Thanks so much for stopping by for a little chat!
LD: It’s my pleasure!  Thanks for having me!
-Firstly, congratulations on your debut book 'Awakened By A Kiss' (released August 3rd, 2010).
LD:Thanks so much!
RJ: What have the past few months been like; with anticipating the release and the feedback you've received thus far? What have you experienced emotionally as well as professionally with the completion of this new book?
LD: The entire experience has been like a wonderful exhilarating ride!  I’ve learned so much about how a manuscript becomes a book.  And I’ve delighted in every step.  It was such a thrill when my editor told me she was going to keep the title I gave the manuscript (AWAKENED BY A KISS: FIERY TALES). That isn’t usually the case.  Most of the time an author’s title is changed.  Then there was the moment I got to see my cover for the first time.  I was so blown away.  It looks even lovelier in person. That raised gold lettering against the dark background is stunning!
This has been a dream come true, and I’m so excited AWAKENED BY A KISS is finally out for readers to enjoy.  The feedback on the book has been the cream on this awesome cake.  :)
RJ: Why don't you tell me and the readers a little bit about 'Awakened By A Kiss' from the author's point of view. What were you trying to achieve with this book, and do you feel like it's 'mission accomplished'?
LD: AWAKENED BY A KISS is the first in my Fiery Tales series. It’s a collection --- steamy retellings of three classic fairy tales.  It was inspired by Charles Perrault’s famous tales – Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots.
I took all the familiar elements of each tale and gave them my own twists, injecting them with doses of heat and romance.
RJ: What challenges or difficulties did you face with the writing of this particular book?
LD: There are easy books and there are difficult books, ones you struggle over each chapter.  I’ve got to say, AWAKENED BY A KISS, just flowed and flowed.  As I was writing Sleeping Beau, the characters and plot of Little Red Writing jumped into my mind.  And as I wrote Little Red Writing, Bewitching in Boots came to me.  I wish they all came to me this easily!
RJ: Where did the inspiration for the plot, characters and setting come from?

LD: It came from my love of the time period this book is set in!  I know a lot about it.  I’ve read voraciously and with great passion about it. I’d love to see more romances set in this time period.  It will surely appeal to anyone who loves Regency set historicals.
RJ: Many authors of historicals choose to tell stories about English nobility with an English backdrop. In 'Awakened By A Kiss', the characters were from the French nobility and you choose seventeenth-century France as your backdrop. What is it about that specific period in history that appeals to you and what made you want to write about the French nobility as appose to the English?
Charles Perrault
LD: I picked this setting because I was writing about fairy tales.  We have seventeenth century French lawyer/writer Charles Perrault to thank for those fairy tales that are near and dear to our hearts.  He was the first to write down folklore and put morals to his stories---long before the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen.  Perrault was the creator of The Tales of Mother Goose.  And since the fairy tales in AWAKENED BY A KISS are based on his famous tales, I set the book in his lifetime.  I just love how elegant and opulent it was.  There were lord and ladies and magnificent masquerade balls.  There were weekly salons where the aristocracy gathered with the literati, (dramatists, writers, poets and grammarians) to discuss and debate politics, religion and literature. And there was plenty of scandalous behavior.  I wanted to write something that would still feel familiar to historical romance readers, yet at the same time bring them something different and fresh.
RJ: Let's talk about your Hero's and Heroine's (Catherine & Adrien, Nicolas & Anne, and Tristan & Elisabeth). What are their flaws and what are their redeeming qualities? Also, what attracts them to each other?
LD: I think Catherine’s flaw at the beginning of the story is that she’s given up on having any kind of happiness.  She has a quiet strength about her but has stopped dreaming and wishing for things.  Adrien is privileged, treated as royalty, and has hardened his heart--- that is until he meets up with Catherine again.  Her problems with her father resonate with Adrien and remind him of his own troubles with his powerful sire. They are attracted to each other because they are similar and are able to open each other’s hearts.
Nicolas is a pretty ambitious guy.  He’s is singularly focused on promotion in the King’s Guard.  Anne is singularly focused on writing her volumes.  I believe what attracts them (besides the physical attraction) is that they have the ability to bring out the best in each other.
Tristan is strong.  A leader.  The former commander of the most prestigious corps in the realm.  Elisabeth is strong.  A leader.  The favorite daughter of the King.  These two develop a mutual respect for each other by the end.  They not only love each other, but they have a high regard for each other, too.
RJ: The writing process differs from author to author. Some are planners while others just jump right in. Some consider themselves night writers, while others need daylight and a park bench or a coffee shop (wink) to set the mood for creativity. What's your writing process and atmosphere like?
LD: I wish I could write in a coffee shop, but I can’t! I love coffee, but I’d be so distracted in a coffee shop.  I write when the kids are in school – with either classical music or new age music playing in the background.  I do most of my writing during the day.  Depending on the deadline, I might write late at night and on weekends, too.  As to whether I plot or just write and let my muse take me where it wants to go----I’d say I do a little of both!  I write a general outline before I start a book.  I’ll know the characters, and I’ll have some scenes drafted out.  Then I dive into the book.
RJ: Romance has transcended so many different sectors of pop culture. I think the Beatles said it best, "All you need is Love". This being a Romance Blog and everything, I've got to ask: what are your favorite romance picks of the following: Favorite Love Song? Favorite Scent on a man? Favorite Romantic Comedy? and of course, Favorite Romance Novel?
LD: Favorite Love Song – I have so many favorites!  But there is one love song that totally melts me.  It’s soooo beautiful.  WHEN I’M WITH YOU, by Sheriff.  The lead singer is Freddie Curci.  His voice is *incredible* and I think he still has the record for holding that final note the longest in recording history.  I’ve no idea how he does it!  As an interesting tidbit, I’m sort of related to him (though I doubt he remembers me!)  Years ago, his sister married one of my cousins.  But I’m not in any way selecting this song for that reason!  I just absolutely love it.  Check it out on youtube.  Make sure you hear the version that plays his final note to the end. *swoon*  I had the privilege of meeting him in person at the wedding.  And yup, incase you’re wondering, he wrote a magnificent song for his sister’s wedding and sang it like an angel. *sighs*
Favorite scent on a man -- Dolce & Gabbana , Light Blue. My husband wears it.  Yum! :)
Favorite Romantic Comedy - Again, too many favorites to list, but I do have a new favorite to add to my long list – Leap Year.   Such a cute movie!
Favorite Romance Novel – No way could I ever select just one!

RJ: What's coming up next for you (book-wise or otherwise)? And also, congrats on your full-length novel book deal!
LD: Thank you for the good wishes!  In November 2010, my next Fiery Tales collection will hit the shelves – THE PRINCESS IN HIS BED – with three more hot historical heroes who find their perfect match.  Inspired by The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “The Ugly Duckling, and “The Princess and the Pea”,  I put my own sensual spin on these classic fairy tales written by Hans Christian Andersen.  They are retold and renamed, “The Marquis’ New Clothes”, “The Lovely Duckling” and “The Princess and the Diamonds”.

RJ: Do you have anything you would like to address to your fans and the readers?
LD: Since I’m a debut author, readers don’t know what to expect from my books.
I’ve taken my love of fairy tales, history and passionate love stories, and blended them intoone steamy yet romantic anthology in AWAKENED BY A KISS. In my books, you can always expect to find a sinfully seductive rake, a strong smart heroine who will make him lose his heart and scorching-hot love scenes that will leave you breathless.

Author’s website:  www.LilaDiPasqua.com
RJ: Okay, Final Question: Name something shocking or interesting about yourself that the readers may not know.

LD: I was named after my paternal grandmother – Lila DiPasqua.  She was strong, independent, smart and fiercely devoted to her family. And she had a great laugh. I’m honored to share her name.
As for my paternal grandfather, Nicola DiPasqua, he was a career soldier and had a soft spot for all his grandchildren. I have many wonderful memories of him – including him sitting in a small kiddie chair, sipping pretend tea with me and my dolls.  He was a true hero in every sense of the word.  And the best grandpa. I’m honored that we shared the same birthday, and for the first 17 years of my life, we celebrated our birthdays together and shared the same birthday cake, too.  Both my grandparents are gone now.  I wish they had lived to see all this.  I know they’d be very proud.
Lila's Question: Hey readers, what's your favorite fairytale movie and why?

-Thanks once again to my special guest, Lila DiPasqua, for stopping by and telling me a little bit about her life and her new book!

'Awakened By A Kiss' by Lila DiPasqua -Review-

Wickedly wanton and thrillingly tantalizing; 'Awakened By A Kiss' was exciting and passionate and one of those reads you just couldn't put down. Set in seventeenth century France, Lila DiPasqua takes 3 beloved childhood fairy tales and gives them a sensuous makeover. You'll never look at sleeping beauty the same way again!
Awakening to a stranger's kiss, one-night stands, aphrodisiacs, forbidden publications, mistaken identity, special agents for the crown, and scarf-loving bastard daughters of the King. All this and more lay within the pages of this spectacular debut by Lila DiPasqua.'Sleeping Beauty' , 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Puss In Boots' have been transformed into something insanely erotic and gratifying for the adults who like a little heat thrown into their happily ever after...

Read a sizzling excerpt: here

Sleeping Beau- Follows the reunion between one of the most notorious bastard sons of the King and the woman who stole into his bedchamber after slipping him an aphrodisiac, awakening him with a kiss that lead to a steamy sexual interlude. He awakes the morning after with his unnamed 'midnight temptress' mysteriously vanished and the evidence of her virginity smeared along the bedsheets. Fast-forward 5 years later and we meet our 'sleeping beau' once again as his gaze alights over the red-headed beauty who has plagued his dreams in all that time. At first, Catherine tries to deny it was her, but Adrien eventually gets his way and get her to reveal why she did what she did. They proceed to have an affair for the week until Cathrine's betrothed comes to get her. The motives behind her deception is out in the open and Adrien can't help but admire the maddening stubbornness of his ladylove. When Catherine's betrothed come for her early, it may be Adrien's own stubbornness that threatens his future happiness with the woman he's pined after for 5 years and now has come to love.

Little Red Writing- The Vignon spinster sisters were beautiful, intelligent, writer with skill, and guarding a secret that could lead straight to their ruin. Nicolas de Savignac (a.k.a The Wolf) is a Musketeer for the King sent on an assignment to unmasked and bring down Gilbert Deluc; author of the incendiary volumes which besmirch the image of men of consequence. His investigation takes him to his estranged grandmother's house and he zeros in the house guests; The Vignon 'spinsters'. He is immediately attracted to one of the sisters: Anne, and although he is in residence under false pretenses (to forge a civil relationship with his grandmother) and inevitably will have to bring charges up against one or all of the sisters, his can't resist the strong pull that draws him to Anne and an affair begins. While Nicolas ruefully gets closer to identifying which sister is the infamous author, he and Anne fall deeper in love with one another. Nicolas' hand is now forced to act when his comrade informs their commander of their suspicion of the Vignon sisters and he is order to bring in the culprit or have the entire family brought in. The betrayal Anne feels is acute, but the love Nicolas has for her and she for him will have to be enough to eclipse whatever plans the King has in store for 'Gilbert Deluc'.

Bewitching In Boots- Being the King's favorite daughter is a coveted position. That distinction was currently held by the headstrong Elisabeth de Roussel. She may be thought of as an outrageous flirt, but she knows what she wants; and she wants Tristan de Tiersomier. Tristan was recently injured and relieved of his duties as commander of the King's private Guard. He retired himself to the grounds at his estate, shunning the world and burying his feelings beneath a sea of resentment. When the enticing Elisabeth saunters her way into his inner-sanctum (and wearing breeches and BOOTS no less) demanding fencing lessons, he can only grit his teeth and try to bare it. Elisabeth, however, has plans of her own. She seeks more than lessons in the fencing arts from Tristan and when she successfully induces an affair, she plots to flip the situation in her favor and make Tristan hers for a lifetime. Her plans could possibly blow up in her face, but she will do anything to heal Tristan's hurts and posses his heart.

Rating: 4 Red Roses
My Favorite Part of the Book: There were many! This book had 3 separate stories within it and I have my favorite moments for each. Bewitching in Boots was my favorite story out of the three and my favorite moment is when Tristan starts questioning Elisabeth's motive for seeking him out. He tries to scare her away by saying that if she isn't out of his home by tomorrow she will be tied up to his bed and he will have his way with her. At first, in the morning, Elisabeth and her entourage are no where to be found, but not only do they come back with reinforcements (to help fix up Tristan's house) but Elisabeth presents Tristan with a box of scarves for him to tie her up with later that night.
What it boils down to is this: Miss DiPasqua is probably one of the most promising debut authors to hit the scene so far in 2010. Her short stories were well-written, well-paced and flavored with an insane amount of heat and spice. I think many short-stories are prone to accelerated plots where the love is unconvincing and the character development lacks; that is not the case with 'Awakened By A Kiss'. It's a little different from the classic historicals I am use to, but it has set a new precedence in my reading exploration and I look forward to reading more from this author!

*In November, DiPasqua will delight us with 3 more fiery tales in 'The Princess In His Bed'

The M.Y.C day in August 2010 is the 31st. All books with release dates closer to the end of the month are sometimes considered the next month's release (ex. some of the following books are advertised as being September 2010 release). I am a stickler, and even though the day following these releases will be September 1st, I still consider them August's books! With that weird technicality out of the way, let's get to the over-flowing shelf fare that this day will have to offer! (note: Tracy Anne Warren will be stopping by on this day, the 31st, for an interview and a giveaway!) The following books are all being released on Tuesday, August 31th, 2010
